Project Management Short Courses

The project management short courses deal with the effective management of commercial projects, from inception to roll-out. The courses teach structured project management schemes, together with current trends for ‘agile’ development and ‘lean’ management of large projects.

The basic course deals with key project-planning and control issues for large-scale or complex projects. The course characterizes the key project planning phases and project control techniques. Added emphasis is placed on the use of structured methodologies for project initiation, estimation, control and closeout. The risks associated with running large projects are discussed, as well as measures for mitigating these risks.
The follow-on course deals with advanced techniques for managing complex commercial projects, to ensure adequate control of their temporal, fiscal and scope constraints. There is detailed treatment of scheduling, reporting and resource leveling issues, including fine-grained dependency analysis. The course also discusses stochastic and deterministic methods for risk analysis, as well as the latest trends in project management.

Various case studies and simulations are utilized to show how to plan, manage and successfully close out complex projects.

The courses are designed primarily for working professionals wishing to acquire contemporary knowledge and learn techniques for effective management of commercial projects. A common theme is the application of formal methods designed to give greater control of large or complex projects.

Prime Project Management Short Courses Learning Outcomes
Delegates attending the courses will learn how to –
• Critically assess the impact of project triple constraints (time, scope and cost) on project outcomes
• Schedule large or complex projects, taking into account scoping, costing and resourcing issues
• Organize project initiation, execution, termination and closeout phases
• Formulate viable risk management schemes for commercial projects
• Plan the use of agile and lean techniques for project management

PMM01: Project Planning and Control
Topics covered:

• Overview of Project Management (PM) phases
• Project Portfolio Management (PPM)
• Project triple constraints; Scoping and costing projects;
• Developing a Project Charter
• Project team composition and management issues
• Developing Project Work-Breakdown-Structures (WBS)
• Project Time and Cost Estimation; Parametric and Analogous Methods
• Project Scheduling; Gantt charting
• Dependency analysis; Network diagrams
• CPM and PERT Techniques
• Critical Success factors for PM; Ethics in PM
• Project Progress Reporting; Project Communications Planning;
• Managing Stakeholder expectations and involvement
• Project termination & Closeout; Mining for lessons to be learnt

Duration: The course features twice weekly synchronous online sessions (2 hours per session), over a 6-week period (24 hours total course contact duration).

PMM02: Advanced Techniques for Managing Commercial Projects
Topics covered:

• Advanced Dependency Analysis with Network Diagrams
• Advanced Resource Leveling Methods
• Managing project risk; Risk Registers and Risk Distribution Graphs (RDGs)
• Working with Risk Breakdown Structures
• Stochastic risk analysis; Monte-Carlo methods
• Project Dashboards and Scorecards;
• Parametric and Analogous costing for projects
• Multi-Factorial Project Audits
• Agile Project Management Schemes (Part 1) – Scrum and eXtreme PM
• Lean/Agile Project Management Schemes (Part 2) – Kanban & Kaizen

Duration: The course features twice weekly synchronous online sessions (2 hours per session), over a 6-week period (24 hours total course contact duration).

The courses are delivered via instructor-led online sessions. Emphasis is placed on the use of topical case studies and relevant simulations to impart practical knowledge and project management expertise. Sessions will involve a mix of instructor presentations and case study work, with supporting classroom discussions.

Assessment of performance will be through delegate-completed portfolio of work. The final course outcome is a college-issued “Project Management” Course Certificate of Completion.
